Acceptable Use Policy

Digital Bristol relies on individuals using its resources appropriately.

The following policies apply both to websites hosted by Digital Bristol and to websites to which a link is provided.


Acceptable Use:

Digital Bristol will accept link information about a website and will host a website which, in the opinion of the management committee, is:

Relevant: to Bristol’s community, business, economic, educational, government, social and leisure concerns
Legal: in the courts of England and Wales
Correct: factually correct
Local: have a direct geographical connection with Bristol life
Current: up to date

Anyone providing link information or website content must be aware of the management committee's requirement that the website contents are Relevant, Legal, Correct, Local and Current, as defined above.

Website content providers are individually responsible for ensuring that the content remains valid within this set of criteria.

All network use by Digital Bristol users shall be for, or in support of, Bristol's community, business and economic, educational, government, social and leisure concerns.

Websites hosted by Digital Bristol are entitled to five megabytes (5Mb) of free web space: this is only available to individuals living or working in Bristol, and local community groups and not-for-profit organisations. The management committee (Currently Bristol City Council, City NetGates, and Hewlett-Packard) is ultimately responsible for selecting successful applicants.


Unacceptable Use:

It is not acceptable to use Digital Bristol for purposes which violate the law in England and Wales.

It is not acceptable to use Digital Bristol in a manner that is intimidating or annoying to other users.

It is not acceptable to use Digital Bristol in a manner that disrupts normal network use and service. Such disruption would include the spreading of computer viruses, the violation of personal privacy, and the unauthorised access to protected and private network resources.

Websites hosted by Digital Bristol must not be used to directly trade (buy or sell goods and services).


Enforcement of Policy:

It is the responsibility of Digital Bristol to make reasonable efforts to publicise the policies of Digital Bristol and to encourage user compliance.

Digital Bristol is not responsible for link information or for the content of websites it hosts.

Ultimate responsibility for proper use and misuse of the Digital Bristol network lies with each individual user of Digital Bristol.

Complaints about links to websites or about websites hosted by Digital Bristol should be sent to the Administrator. Reported and perceived violations of the Acceptable Use policy will be reviewed by the Digital Bristol management committee. All decisions about actions resulting from complaints will rest with the management committee.

Violations that are not promptly remedied by the individual/organisation responsible may result in the removal of links from the Digital Bristol database and / or stored pages from the Digital Bristol server, and / or in any other actions considered appropriate by the management committee. Any website hosted by Digital Bristol, or a link to any website, can be removed without explanation.

Digital Bristol reserves the right to prevent or limit access to Digital Bristol site and network by any individual or organisation without explanation.
