PRIORIES, FRIARIES AND PRESBYTERIES: ASPECTS OF THE RELIGIOUS ARCHAEOLOGY OF MEDIEVAL BRISTOL
Over the last 40 years, the centre of Bristol has been subjected to the most vigorous redevelopment in its history. This has resulted in the radical destruction of large areas of the medieval and later archaeology of the town. Not least among the sites damaged are the religious institutions that bound together medieval life and society. Although their soil has been removed or grossly disturbed, large-scale archaeological excavations have attempted to preserve their plans and recover their material remains. This one-day symposium will look at some of the results of this work and show how our views of religious life in Bristol have been augmented and changed by the archaeological process.
