CELEBRATING our CENTENARY
Bristol Civic Society is 100 years old on May 23rd
So this is a very special year for us and it deserves special treatment, and so do we!
Of course we must continue our considerable campaigning which is probably our primary purpose. Trying to control what we see as inappropriate developments in sensitive areas such as McArthurs Warehouse on the site of the ss Great Britain (now being assessed for qualification as a world heritage site by UNESCO); Broadmead’s development and the Wine Street area, yes that one keeps coming up!
Then we are deeply involved in Wapping Wharf and Redcliffe. This all means putting bodies on the line and many have been doing it for some years now!
Celebration, to what end?
How will we create a little fun, something different, for the hard workers, our loyal supporters and members generally ? And how can we use this centenary event to marshal new and fresh interest in this dynamic organisation?
These are the events and actions planned so far:
The Centenary Book
This tells our story over the century in colourful visual form. It recounts the many serious campaigns in which we, and some others, have been involved.
It will be launched at the Bristol United Press party on May 23. It will be sent to all members, and all on our newsletter circulation list.
It will be available in many outlets around Bristol such as: the Museum bookshop, the Architecture Centre, the Bristol Guild and, we hope it will also be for sale in some other leading bookshops.
In it will be a new members leaflet encouraging the public to join the Society. This leaflet will be spread much further of course.
Our New Identity! Logo
This will be reproduced as a completely new abstract design around the Bristol Civic Society name and will appear on all our printed material. There will be centenary letter paper carrying the theme:
‘100 years of campaigning for a better Bristol.’ The new identity will be launched at the Party.
The Architecture Centre
From May 19th until May 27 th the main upstairs room will carry an exhibition reflecting our centenary book under the banner heading ‘BCS -100 years of campaigning for a better Bristol’.
On May 27th: 12.30 -2.00pm there will be a debate in the exhibition room, the sixth in our six monthly series, on the highly topical subject of:
‘A new future for neighbourhood planning in Bristol’.
We hope that our Head of Planning, Jerry Hicks and Ben Barker (from The Southville Centre, Bedminster) will speak. Book early at the Centre.
Over to you
I really hope that we can celebrate the work we have achieved and create some impetus for the next generation through these events. We can all tell our friends and others that we are an organisation worthy of its strapline:‘An independent force for a better Bristol’
