EVERY YEAR the public and our members are encouraged to select sites which they believe are an environmental improvement anywhere in Bristol. The nominations have to be made by 1 June and they refer to schemes completed in the preceding calendar year.

Awards are given for:

bulletNew or renovated buildings
bulletImprovements in spaces between buildings, parks and open spaces
bulletNew or renovated murals or monuments
bulletImaginative use or adaptation of buildings no longer required for their original purpose.

Winners come to a presentation ceremony (usually in November) and receive a plaque and certificate.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS 2007

Our 'panel'  selected 7 winners this year and the ceremony to celebrate was held at :The Paintworks, Bath Road, Tuesday November 13
at 11.0 a.m.

The ceremony was hosted by our Chairman, John Payne. Keith Warmington, BBC Radio Bristol, presented the awards to representatives from the winning sites. Our Sponsors, Bristol Water were present and the Evening Post reported on the event.

bulletAldermans Park, Redland An unusual redbrick development by Acanthus Ferguson Mann
bulletWoodland House - Dominion Housing A warm italianate residential development replacing the University Sports Hall.
bulletSomerset House, Kingsdown A mixed-use development created from considerable community consultation.
bulletCircomedia Portland Square A sensitive conversion from St Pauls Church to a circus training centre. A fine building imaginatively reused.
bulletSt Peters Court, Bedminster The PG group have created a new community of residents with affordable housing and market-led apartments, a GP surgery with a chemist attached, the Grant Bradley Gallery, a new library and a restaurant.
bulletCafé - Blaise Castle Estate A city council success drawing a warm response from the Chairman of Blaise
bulletSt Georges Heights, Redfield Seventeen apartments for those on housing benefit, a charity shop and St Peter’s Church offices, this PG Group project adds distinction to the area.
bulletThe S.S Great Britain Yet another accolade for this maritime icon. Renovations and the innovative dry dock setting were carried out by the Alec French Partnership.

The Civic Society thank Bristol Water for their generous support and Bristol Zoo for hosting our Award Ceremony in their Terrace Theatre. We also thank Keith Warmington of BBC Radio Bristol for presenting the Awards.

 

bulletBristol University’s Dorothy Hodgkin Building, named after its Nobel Prize-winning fifth Chancellor.
bulletSt Anne’s Infants new nursery. Together with its adjoining Junior School it has now been listed Grade II by English Heritage.
bulletBristol Zoo’s Terrace Theatre is a flexible, multipurpose facility, built to the highest standard of ‘green’ design.
bulletThe George’s Square Atrium is in a building on the site of the former Courage Brewery.
bulletAdjacent to Welsh Back, the Victorian ‘Byzantine’ Granary has been restored and refurbished as city centre apartments.
bulletThe St Paul’s Community Sports Academy is an outstanding success with over 70% use being by local residents.
bulletThorne Security have provided a bright ‘lift’ to 29/37 West Street, Old Market as part of the regeneration of the area.
bulletAn eye-catching modern mews house, 28 Kings Parade Avenue, off Whiteladies Road.
bulletLast, but very much not least, 7-12 Triangle South, Clifton, is a delightful surprise.
