ROUND AND ABOUT IN BRISTOL . . . . .
Hartcliffe Millennium Green
Hartcliffe Millennium Green is a three and a half acre community owned park, which was created in January 1999 through grants from the Millennium Commission/Countryside Agency. The Millennium Green transformed a flat green space into a well landscaped and designed park and garden area, with a pond, reed bed, amphitheatre, rockery garden, willow sculpture, orchard and plenty of seating.
The Park has two play areas, one for under fours funded through Sure Start and one for older children, which was recently built through grants from the South Bristol URBAN 2 European Regional Development Fund and the Playing Fields and Community Green Spaces Programme run by Sport England.
All the key features of the Green have been developed as a direct result of local input. An active friends group of local residents regularly volunteer their time to help oversee and promote the park through gardening, painting and organising events and activities.
Local schools have been closely involved in the development of the Green and regularly use it as an outdoor classroom to enhance the children’s learning experiences. A Junior Rangers lunchtime club at Teyfant Community School meet weekly to do activities such as planting bulbs and trees, fence painting and litter picking. The group have designed their own logo, which has been printed on distinctive hooded sweatshirts.
Students from Hartcliffe School work on the Millennium Green to help achieve Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) awards, which are designed to promote the personal and social development of learners. For example last year students helped to design and apply for funding for a new play area for 8 – 14 year olds and also created an analemmatic sundial.
Students are presently working towards creating a booklet about the Millennium Green and in April 2005 will be attending stone carving workshops at Shute Farm Studio in Somerset to create a stone totem pole for the park.
