A Wellingtonia on Brandon Hill - Update. NB For Quaker's Friars - See below.

Following the publication of my piece about this tree in the last Newsletter things have moved on. Almost immediately I had a phone call from the ssGB office saying that they wanted to do something about the plaque - I gather that Stephen McFarlane had given them a prod! This was followed by two other calls, from BCS members, saying that they would be happy to donate to help. The current state of play is that a new plaque will be erected, paid for by the ssGB and done with the willing help of the City. In order to keep costs down the wording will be somewhat different from the original, but sticks to its spirit. We have agreed:

THIS 'WELLINGTONIA' TREE, OVERLOOKING THE ss GREAT BRITAIN, THE SHIP
WHICH BROUGHT THE FIRST SAPLING TO ENGLAND, COMMEMORATES THE 130th
ANNIVERSARY OF HER LAUNCH AND PLANT A TREE YEAR.
PLANTED 19TH JULY 1973.
BRISTOL CIVIC SOCIETY, BRISTOL CITY COUNCIL AND THE ss GB TRUST.

Thus, it looks as if we'll get a plaque back after all these years. Wonderful.

Quaker's Friars.

The old buildings in the central part of the Quaker's Friars area are soon to be empty. The Registrar's Office will relocate to the Old Council House in Corn St, thereby bringing that building back to life.

The Civic Society Committee feels that we should search for ideas on possible new uses for the old QF buildings.

If any members, or other readers of this Newsletter, have suggestions on this subject, please let me know, either by email at james@briggs13.fsnet.co.uk or by post at 194 Stoke Lane, Bristol BS9 3RU. I will pass these on.
