GOOD NEWS
Bristol Cultural Development Partnership (BCDP) recently received the excellent news that it had been awarded £1.55m from the Millennium Commission to support cultural projects in the city in 2005 and 2006. The ward was made through the Urban Cultural Programme. Over 40 cities applied for funding and Bristol's was the fourth highest award granted.
The funding application was based on ideas developed following the wide-ranging consultation that took place in the preparation of Bristol's campaign to be European Capital of Culture in 2008 (Bristol was short listed for the title and was named one of only five UK Centres of Culture).
In 2005, "Creativity, Imagination and the City" will be the focus for a year-long celebration of Bristol creativity, building on the city's strengths in the arts and science and linked to the reopening of Arnolfini and the centenary of the opening of the city art gallery.
Throughout 2006, there will be an exciting programme of events under the banner "Brunel 200" to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Activities for both programmes will include exhibitions, festivals, education work, publications, community arts activities, conferences and temporary arts projects, and all communities and neighbourhoods will be encouraged to participate. "Brunel 200" will also include new Brunel trails and guides, and a plaques programme. It will celebrate the life, work and legacy of the man who had a major impact upon the development of he city, as well as celebrate the fields of engineering, architecture, design, innovation, arts and sciences. It will look to the resent day, as much as the past, and help to build the new Brunels of the future.
To be added to the "Brunel 200" mailing list and to receive updates on the development of the programme, email: brunel200@btopenworld.com or write to BCDP, Leigh Court, Abbots Leigh, Bristol BS8 3RA.
