The section is involved in both local and national surveys. Nationally they participate in the ongoing surveys including the Breeding Bird Survey, the Winter Farmland Bird Survey, the annual Heronry count, annual wader counts, Garden Birdwatch and the Nest Record Card scheme.

They also help with specific surveys- this year the Breeding birds of Wet meadows.

Locally they are involved in an annual count of Avon Rookeries, they monitor overwintering Blackcaps, they do a Winter Garden Survey which has now run for twenty five years, and the new Bristol Bird Watch, and they do Winter Bird Counts as well as helping with the Peregrine Watch on the Downs in the summer.
