WHAT IS THE BRISTOL
NORTH-SOUTH FORUM?
Vision
Bristol & District North South Forum seeks to
foster awareness and action enabling our local community
to be empowered 'global citizens' sharing one planet, one
environment and an increasingly interdependent world
economy. Members have a common interest in building
awareness and taking action on international issues of
development, environment, justice and conflict.
Aims
* To strengthen networking, information sharing and
liaison between its members to promote effective local,
national and international action for sustainable
development within the context of 'Agenda 21'.
* To promote international issues
and perspectives to Bristol City councillors and nearby
local authorities, local politicians, the public and
selected audiences via policy briefings, education,
awareness building, events and media work.
* To advocate corporate local
Authority policies and processes like Fairtrade and
environmentally sensitive procurement, ethical
investment, international municipal support, waste
management and global citizenship education which foster
international sustainable development.
* To support local international
'North-South' twinning activities and events.
* To seek and distribute funds to
build awareness and support overseas projects.

CONSTITUTION
BRISTOL
AND DISTRICT NORTH - SOUTH FORUM CONSTITUTION
April 1999 The Forum will be
known as the Bristol and district North - South
Forum.
AIMS
The
Bristol and district North - South Forum will
encourage and support organisations and
associations within Bristol and district,
including Bristol City Council and other local
authorities in the area, on issues, initiatives
and campaigns relating to international
sustainable development, peace and the
environment in line with Agenda 21 signed at the
Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.
OBJECTIVES
The
Bristol and district North - South Forum
will:
*
Strengthen the network of existing development,
peace and environment groups;
*
Facilitate the exchange of information between
Bristol City Council, other local authorities in
the area and development, peace and environment
groups on issues and events;
*
Help co-ordinate campaigns and work, including
educational and twining activities;
*
Act as an advisory body to Bristol City Council
and other local authorities in the area;
*
Help formulate policy, where appropriate, in
partnership with Bristol City Council and other
local authorities in the area;
*
Will seek and distribute funds within the remit
of its aims and objectives.
REPRESENTATION
The
Bristol and district North - South Forum will be
open to:
*
Associations and organisations whose main aim is
development, peace and environment with an
international perspective;
*
Officers, elected representatives including up to
2 members of relevant committees of Bristol City
Council and other local authorities in the
area;
* A
representative from the Bristol City Council
environment liaison committee;
*
Other organisations or representatives with the
agreement of the Forum.

OFFICERS
The
posts of Convenor, Secretary and Treasurer will
be elected annually at the first meeting of the
new calendar year.
The
Treasurer shall open a bank account in the name
of Bristol and district North - South
Forum. All three officers will be
signatories to the account. Cheques will
only be valid with any two of the three
signatures. The Treasurer will present an
annual audit of the accounts to the Forum.
MEETINGS
Meetings
of the Bristol and district North - South Forum
will normally
be
four times per year
( currently in obeyance)
The
Chair will be rotated at each meeting among those
organisations eligible to attend the Forum.
Meetings
will be quorate with 5 or more delegates
representing different organisations or
associations.
Meetings
will have the power to advise and decide upon
policy and campaigning issues.
If an
issue arises between meetings, the officers have
the power to either convene an extra meeting or
take whatever action they consider appropriate
after consulting with as many organisations and
associations as is practicable.
A work
programme will be drawn up annually.
