Our
conductor David Homer has the unusual distinction of holding
both a professional qualification in music and a doctorate in physics.
He combines the choral direction of this society with a busy life as
Head of Science at a leading Bristol independent school. Born in the
West Midlands, he studied organ in Birmingham with George Miles and
with Ann Page in Cambridge before being awarded an LTCL diploma in organ
performance. His piano studies were with Mark Racz and Allan Schiller.
He directed the prestigious all-male Chapel Choir of King Edward's School,
Birmingham for 12 years and also sang with, and acted as repetiteur
for, the CBSO Symphony Chorus working with a number of leading conductors
including Sir Simon Rattle. Since moving to Bristol he has worked mainly
with school ensembles performing regularly at St Georges Brandon Hill
and other concert venues in the city, including work with the Bristol
Grammar School Junior Choir on Radio 4's daily Act of Worship . David
took over the direction of Portishead Choral Society in January 2007
after three years as its rehearsal accompanist.
