Public Statement on Conflict in Iraq January 2003

This statement has been prepared by Bristol Quakers, in the belief that non-violence is the only sure way to lasting peace and security. We are sending it to local MPs and MEPs, Government ministers, local faith communities - both Christian and non-Christian - and to the Bristol Evening Post and local broadcasters.

Iraq - the questions

Mindful that countries other than Iraq - including the United Kingdom - already possess 'weapons of mass destruction' we ask these two questions:

  • Is it possible to wage war without harming the civilian populations of Iraq, neighbouring countries and countries supporting an attack?
  • Will terrorist attacks be any less likely as a result of war?

The answer to both of these questions is almost certainly 'No'.

We urge the British Government, through the United Nations, to pursue all diplomatic initiatives that may prevent war. The principles governing peaceful relations between countries must not be damaged by unilateral action.

What can we do in this grave situation?

Use all peaceful means to make your views known by:

  • Writing to your MP asking for more fair and informed debate - it is still not too late.
  • Using the opportunities provided by the media to keep these questions in front of the public.
  • Supporting vigils, peaceful rallies and non-violent demonstrations.

Work with us for peace, which could in the long term break the cycle of international violence in the Middle East.

Doing nothing is not an option.
